Anna Elkins

To Readers of Ecclesiastes

there is sky in us
                    whether or not
          we wear wings

we are born to fly
          no strangers
                    to flight
                    or desire

it is easy to mistake the pull
                    and beat of wing
as meaningless

          perhaps we misread
                    perhaps
it is only meaning less
than the words we cannot taste
with the flavors of this world
